Capsized (The Great Dismal Swamp)

*(explanation & background at end)

It hurts to read this today against this backdrop of quiet
Only the rain that rattles the window
The graphite smooth spinning of the fanblades
The rhythm of the clock on the wall as the seconds fall

How many years ago and still the memory is here
Something that’s nothing like a word on a page
Can bring the feelings back
A few notes from a lonesome guitar that echoes in the stairwell
Like words from an overheard conversation
That seem to apply, though they drop in unannounced and uninvited
My fingers play the notes of the song
My lips form words that I never thought to speak
My hands grip the pen as it scribes the terms
Without searching for words, how does this happen and why?

Because they exist just barely submerged
Under brackish tanic water
Under February ice broken in a capsize
Up from Lake Drummond in 1979

While the minute hand changes, and the hours too
And time continues on into the endless
There is something that stays stopped in place
With every such event there is a person
Without the momentum to make it beyond
Until the concussion of a word or a sound or a feeling
Brings a ghost of that person to the surface
Only long enough for a single pale glance
The breath of remembrance against my cheek

The loudest sound in the world today
While the soft steady rain rattles the window
Against this backdrop of quiet
It hurts to read this today, and to remember

-----------------
Ah, memories... I wrote this after something brought up two simultaneous remembrances, flashes of deep hidden memory of two events from my childhood. Both events had a deep impact on me and the two became intertwined in the above peice of writing.

Age 9, capsized in the freezing black waters of The Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia. I thought we were going to die and we well could have.

Age 11, my 'girlfriend' Rose being murdered (along with her mother) by her step father right after I saw them that night.

Schitzo Ipod

As much as I prefer the audio quality of other formats, for on the go the IPOD is great. I have about 5,500 songs on mine and it's pretty funny to see the listings created using the shuffle feature. Here's a part of the playlist I heard today:

Fingerprintz - "Fingerprince" (late 70s/early 80s precursor to the Scottish band The Silencers)
Course Of Empire - "The Information" (one of my all time fave bands - intelligent, complex & creative)
Happiness Factor - "Man From The Filling Station" (Salim Nourallah's old band-great stuff!)
Texas - "Insane" (nice Scottish rock, bluesy soulful female singer)
Manic Street Preachers - "Solitude Sometimes Is"
Hothouse Flowers - "Water" (one of the best from this Irish band's best album Songs From The Rain)
Hoodoo Gurus - "Dig It Up" (great Aussie band, 50s + surf + B-movie = this)
The Clash - "One Emotion"
Interpol - "Take You On A Cruise"
Grant McLennan - "One Plus One" (RIP, Grant. You are missed already)
Big Country - "You, Me & The Truth" (excellent Scottish rock band, one of my 3 all time faves)
The Doors - "Spanish Caravan"
Sunny Day Real Estate - "How It Feels To Be Something On"
Travis - "Side"
Van Morrison - "Moondance" (love the Moondance album & No Guru, No Method, No Teacher)
Radiohead - "Street Spirit"
Pink Floyd - "Poles Apart"
Steve Kilbey - "Like A Ghost"
Elvis Costello - "Love Field"
Lightning Waltz - "While You Can" (my own songs are on my playlist, hehe)
Robyn Hitchcock - "Flesh Number One (Beatle Dennis)"
Sundays - "My Finest Hour"
Echo & The Bunnymen - "Rescue"
Mark Eitzel - "Aspirin"
The Skids - "Charade" (Scottish post-punk, a young Stuart Adamson on guitar)
Gene - "We'll Find Our Own Way"
Volares - "Elegy For Tiny Tim" (Bucks Burnett, Paul Averitt & Dare Mason)
The Church - "Romany Caravan"
Ramones - "Blitzkrieg Bop"
Paul Simon - "Rhythm Of The Saints" (best album he's made in my opinion)
Sting - "All This Time"
Leonard Cohen - "Who By Fire"
Daniel Lanois - "Amazing Grace" (I love Lanois' work - off the fantastic album Acadie)
Beatles - "Hard Days Night"
Stereophonics - "Looks Like Chaplin"
Mike Ness - "Charmed Life" (this is the real deal - fantastic solo album Cheating At Solitaire)
Aimee Mann - "Going Through The Motions"
...Trail Of Dead - "Days Of Being Wild"
Ray Charles - "Hide Nor Hair"
Jethro Tull - "Said She Was A Dancer"
Doves - "Intro"
Midnight Oil - "Warakurna"
Cake - "I Will Survive"
Police - "Ms Gradenko"
Pogues - "Blue Heaven" (what's not to like about this excellent Irish band?!)
Waterboys - "Fisherman's Blues"
Gary Moore - "Still Got The Blues"
Verve - "Velvet Morning"
Frank Sinatra - "Fly Me To The Moon"

What a ragged play list! I love music and haven't given myself time to listen to any in ages. Now that this Ipod is full maybe I'll get the chance...
